Happy October to all! We’re going to talk about social isolation at our next meeting.
Parkinson’s can be a socially isolating disease. Stiffness, slowness. tremors, dyskinesia, and other motor symptoms, whether due to Parkinson’s or medication side-effects, can cause us to feel embarrassed and self-conscious when out with others. Worries about losing our balance and falling may make us hesitant to get together with friends and family. Soft voices and speech difficulties make us hard to be heard and understood, causing conversation to be frustrating. Sometimes mustering up the energy to go somewhere and do something feels like too much effort, opening the door for anxiety to let itself in.
Does this sound like you? Or not? Do embarrassment, self-consciousness, fear, anxiety – or anything else – keep you home? Or are you able to work through these feelings? What are your coping skills?
